Pre-rut is the time of year when bucks are starting to set their breeding territories. Signs of pre-rut are scrapes, rub lines, and signposts. Predict where bucks will visit during this time using scrapes and tarsal signals. Buck urine can be used at any phase but it is particularly effective during the pre-rut.
The Rut
The rut is the week of peak breeding activity. Breeding peaks at different times depending on where you live. Research when the rut begins in your state. Doe estrous is an effective scent to use during this phase.
Post Rut
Post-rut is when the reproduction season begins to end, and most of the does have been bred. At this point, the bucks will begin their recovery process. When bucks stop chasing, they will want to return to a food source. Doe estrous and buck urine can work during the post-rut but switching back to food scent works best.
There are different scents available to attract deer. Understand what scent or attractant is most effective and when. Food scents are best right before the hunting season and during the post-rut of the reproductive cycle. Buck urine, scrapes, and tarsal signals work best in the pre-rut stage. During the rut, doe estrous is the most effective attractant. To keep deer around you year-round, start a food plot.
